Draw distance (buildings/objects/etc) (LOD?) VERY short
Thank you for taking the time to read and potentially respond to my question. I have searched for possible solutions but have only come across old posts (mid 2015 and earlier) about draw distance issues after patch 1.05 -but no solutions. I could not find any recent posts and am unsure if I am alone in this issue at the current patch that I am playing (1.12.1 - GOG)
I have not played for quite some time and was hoping to get back to my journey.
However, the draw distance (in cities most noticeably) is pretty sub-par. I do not recall this issue at all existing when I used to play around 1.03 to 1.08/1.09.
The small stone wall/fences disappear as I move away, while still very close, buildings disappear and pop in with more detailed versions and revert back around approximately 2 river widths distance. And so on. The changes are not subtle, an entire building would disappear and then come re-appear, like witchcraft haha!
I was able to resolve the shadow draw distance issues using the tweak suggestions provided in the sticky'd thread which was extremely helpful!
However... I cannot find a way to resolve this, it is far too distracting and really ruins the ambience of the game. Any advice, links or information would be greatly appreciated. It is an 'issue' I am able to easily replicate without effort.
Settings: Ultra, including hairworks. NO AA, Sharpening, Vignette or Chromatic Abberation.
Resolution: 1440p
Specs: i7-6700K, 32gb of RAM, game installed on an M.2 500gb SSD, GPU: nVidia GTX 980Ti (6gb)
I can provide screenshots and potentially short videos of the issue if necessary.
Thank you again, I was not able to find any recent posts on this issue. Steps I have taken are to delete the ini's and start fresh. This is a fresh install as well anyway (although old save games).

This mod will be your best friend. It maxes out the LOD for many objects in the game (check out the images tab to see screenshot comparisons with and without the mod.) Although you should be aware that each object has a hardcoded limit to how far the LOD can be increased, so it can't work miracles but it does help a lot.
You mentioned you increased the shadow LOD, and that's a good thing too. Just to be clear, did you increase the CascadeShadowDistanceScale0 value in your
user.settingsfile? Because that increases the cutoff distance at which high-quality nearby shadows change to lower-quality mid-distance shadows. The reason that's important is because some objects are flagged to only cast close-up shadows, and simply not have any shadows once you move beyond close range. Therefore, by raising the value of CascadeShadowDistanceScale0 to something larger like 3 (ultra shadow settings put it at 1.4, by comparison,) you allow those unfortunate objects to continue possessing their one and only shadow for longer distances away.
You should also be aware that when you increase that value you will effectively decrease the shadow resolution for close-up shadows, since the same resolution as before now needs to cover much more area. If the resolution becomes too terrible for your taste, you can either cut back on the aforementioned value until you're happy with the trade-off between nearby shadow resolution and object shadow pop-in, or alternatively you can raise the CascadeShadowmapSize value in
user.settings(for example, from 2048 to 3072) to increase the resolution of your shadows in order to compensate for the resolution being degraded. But, needless to say, performance will suffer.

Thank you for your quick reply!
I kept playing and found that the LOD (draw distance) issue was most jarring in specific areas around the world, I will keep going and I will investigate the mod! Thank you for the link, I will give a look! I'm hoping that the changes the mod does are changes I can do myself in the ini (ideally)! But will investigate.
Regarding the CascadeShadowDistanceScale0 setting, I changed it to a value of 2, no higher. By default my ShadowMapSize was already at 3072 so I left it as is.
Primarly I wasn't looking to over-improve quality, I just wanted to get rid of the very obvious shadows popping in. Particularly ship shadows on buildings, it's far too obvious! It worked a treat, the distance was 'far enough', and I made sure to check the close up shadows, (face, etc) and they all looked more than satisfactory.
On a related side note, is there a reason this has happened? So far as I could tell the game looked and ran 'perfectly' when I had last played up to... I could have sworn it was patch 1.08. Was this unintentional? Intentional? Side effect of some other fix? Was there ever any word on it from CDPR?
Thanks again for replying!
It sounds to me as if the game might not be drawing the distant LoD meshes. That could be corruption if you upgraded directly from 1.09 to 1.12.1.
First, delete all of the files in the same directory as your user.settings file (EXCEPT the gamesaves folder -- KEEP that). Then, verify the integrity of the game cache (Steam) / validate your installation (GOG). If using GOG, I would not use Galaxy to do this, but take the time to download the actual installation .EXEs and run those locally. (This will return all settings to default. Once you confirm everything is working, you can up your details and re-apply the shadow tweaks and what-not.)
If that doesn't work, back up your save games, uninstall, and reinstall a fresh copy of the game. If it's data corruption, that should definitely sort you out.
If not...back to the forums...*grumble*...stupid computers...*grumble*...
I, for one, only installed this game for the first time a week or two ago, so it's not a matter of having upgraded versions in my case.
Can you post a short video of the issue?
