One of Dolly Parton's more popular songs is "Coat of Many Colors." The song tells a story of how momma Parton sewed together a coat from an assortment of colorful rags. This movie is an adaption of that song and episode in Dolly's childhood. The movie is a well-constructed production: the script is tight and witty, the acting ensemble was well cast, an ample budget is evident, and many timely messages were conveyed.
Alyvia Alyn Lind portrays young Parton, and does an excellent job. Lind is a fresh, plucky young actress who provided a consistent tone through the whole movie. Cast as her mother, Jennifer Nettles compliments Lind with an equally quality performance. Country music fans know Nettles can sing, but who knew she could act! She comes across as a seasoned veteran. Ricky Schroder, though not given much opportunity to show the depth of his acting skills, holds down his part as father Parton. The remaining Parton clan is cast with young actors who generate authentic chemistry. Thanks to a well written script, many of the young actors were provided with funny and entertaining lines that reminded me of the ensembles from the Little Rascals/Our Gang series.
This event in Dolly's life may not have happened exactly as portrayed in the movie, but nonetheless, the sentiments and messages of love, tolerance, forgiveness, friendship, patience – and other ideals – are well presented without coming across too sappy. All in all, the movie is a quality family movie which can be viewed multiple times. Unfortunately, it seems like these types of movies are harder and harder to come by. This movie would make Scrooge smile!

I had seen Coat of Many Colors on TV and liked it a lot.
I thought it'd be a good DVD choice to add to my "grannie's" collection for my grandchildren.
This is truly an inspiring true story of the living legend singer Dolly Parton.
In this movie Dolly shares her rags-to-rhinestones upbringing with her parents and seven siblings in TN
They are a close knit, hard working family that overcomes the devastating loss of an infant sibling.
They discover healing powers of forgiveness and faith.
Little nine year old Dolly's patchwork Coat of Many Colors helped empower her to become the legend she is today.
Dolly's voice has touched many hearts around the globe.
The story is funny, lesson learning, sentimental and faith endowed.
Truly inspiring and can be used as a great teaching aide for children.
I don't usually rate things a 5 star because I "don't love things", but this movie is worth it.

What a beautiful Movie.I have always Loved Dolly Pardon.When She preforms You can see The "Love She Has in Her Heart," This was a well-made movie,the Little Girl that plays "Dolley" as a Child was so Good,I actually was able to imagine This was a "Flash Back" Of Dolly as well as The folks who played her Family.I have seen Dolly preform as a wonderful entertainer.I have seen Her in Movies ( She shows the "Spirit of Love" ) One can see Her Faith in the Way She lives Her life ! With all the Gossip rag's , internet , etc I haven't ever seen talk regarding DIRT in regards to Her .
It was a great encouragement to ME .It was a Sweeter Time when keeping the Family together was serious,Eating Dinner,Knowing where everyone was. Neighbors Helped One another in times of Need.....A Great Christmas Movie,Not the usual Boy Meets Girl Or Girl Meets A Guy Etc.The whole Family could spend a evening watching together. I hope Dolly will make Movies The whole Family can see !

This movie is incredibly touching, especially since it is a true story based on part of Dolly's own life. I cried in several places. I would have to say this movie is "food for the soul." It is very well made and engaging from the first to the last scene, and the acting by everyone is excellent. The story shows how anything and everything can be overcome. It is a message of hope, and the whole world would benefit from watching it.
The first time I saw Dolly Parton was on "The Porter Wagner Show." Porter, (a long tall drink of water), was advertising Black Draught, which is a laxative, and I was cracking up. Then Dolly came out and explained the origin of her song, "Coat of Many Colors." I broke down and cried at this very personal and beautiful story she shared so sincerely with all of us viewers.
Dolly, thank you for all your contributions to our world, for your authenticity, ambition, integrity and the example you set for everyone. You are the best! You are truly an Ambassador of Good Will to All. May God continue to Bless you.

I love Dolly and this is a lovely, sweet story. I grew up listening to her and watching her and Kenny Rogers on TV.
In the early 80's when I was 12, we drove through Nashville when we were moving across the states. My father stopped at a place that had a big display on Dolly and her family and I was so excited to see everything - I was the only one in my family that loved country music, so I thought it was pretty special that my parents indulged me in this way. So yes, I am a big fan. My boys and I watched this movie last weekend and we all just loved it. It is so timeless and I have already shared it with a neighbor.

One story in the life of Dolly Parton with a rough story line. Really, really hard times. It is wonderful how she tells her story (one of them) about all the love shown in her family, even though they had only the bare necessities of life. Jennifer Nettles is AMAZING; as is Rick Schroeder, Gerald McRaney, and little Dolly, Alyvia Lind, is just too cute. Beautifully directed. Also has bonus features about casting the roles which was very interesting. Watch this and then get the Christmas special to go with it.

I just love the old school charm of this endearing story of a young Dolly Parton, the movie will make you laugh and cry, it's a beautiful movie nicely cast, I would be careful showing it to young children and expecting mothers bc the story line is very emotional when Dollys mother looses her baby. I loved it so much I purchased the movie for my daughter to watch as well as purchased the book Coat Of Many Colors for my 5 yr old grandaughter! She's very excited about getting it and will be surprised when she sees I also sent Dollys CD that includes the sons from the book

COAT OF MANY COLORS is a strong, effective drama pulling no punches in its presentation of the setbacks entailed by Depression economics and a stillborn infant on a backwoods Appalachian family. Its star shines brightly as the explosively extroverted Dolly Parton, rebellious, though fiercely loyal to her family against outside persecutors. However, blasphemous utterances of the lead make for an intensity unsuitable for preteen audiences.
